The Time Traveler's Wife -- The Time Traveler's Wife Movie Quotes

The Time Traveler's Wife -- The Time Traveler's Wife Movie QuotesHenry DeTamble (Eric Bana) is a librarian in Chicago who has a genetic disorder. Whenever he is under extreme stress, he hurtles, physically, through time. He has no control over this. Also, he always ends up naked wherever he lands when he time travels.

There is also no knowing when DeTamble will return to normal time again when this happens. In one scene he suddenly shows up at home, to his wife Clare Abshire (Rachel McAdams). A quote:

Clare Abshire: Youíre back.
Henry DeTamble: Did I miss Christmas?
Clare Abshire: Yeah. And New Yearís.

But Clare has been in love with DeTamble since she was six years old. That was when she saw him, a grown man, naked in a forest. He asked if he could borrow a blanket. Then he told her he is a time traveler, and asked her to always leave clothes for him so that if he hurtles back to the forest, heíll always have something to wear. Some quotes:

Clare Abshire: I wrote down every time that you came to visit me.
Henry DeTamble: Which I gather I did, or will do, fairly often.
Clare Abshire: The last time that I saw you, I was 18. Seems that you go back to the same places a lot.
Henry DeTamble: Yeah, it's like gravity. Big events pull you in.
Clare Abshire: I was a big event.
Henry DeTamble: So it would seem.

With Clare, DeTamble manages to build a normal life, as much as is possible, when they finally cross paths in real time. Some people actually like the fact that DeTamble time travels, including his friend Gomez. A movie quote:

Gomez: Listen, in the future, do Charisse and I get married? Do I go bald? Does Charisse go bald?
Henry DeTamble: Iím not gonna tell you things about your life. Knowing stuff in advance makes you crazy.
Gomez: Youíre full of shit, you know that?

This is a romantic love story with extraordinary twists and turns, and some sad realizations, including the fact that traveling through time does not mean you can control what happens.

Hereís The Time Travelerís Wife quote that sums up the pith of the movie. It is a scene where Henry and Clare talk of their daughter, Alba, who inherits her fatherís disorder, but has more control over it:

Clare Abshire: Honey, do you know who that is playing with Alba?
Henry DeTamble: That's Alba.
Clare Abshire: Yes, I know, but who is that with her?
Henry DeTamble: That's your daughter. She's time-travelling. Is it too weird for you?
Clare Abshire: No, it's actually kind of magical.

Clare Abshire: I wouldn't change one second of our life together.

Richard DeTamble: [many years after his wife's death] I still miss her. I miss her every day.

Richard DeTamble: [bitterly] If you traveled back to then, why couldn't you have stopped her from getting into that goddamn car?

Alba at Nine: Tell me the story of how you and Mama met?
Henry DeTamble: Doesn't she tell you?
Alba at Nine: She does, but not like you do.
Henry DeTamble: Well, it was right here in this meadow. And one fine day, your mom, who's just a tiny little thing, goes out to the clearing, and there's a man there.
Alba at Nine: With no clothes.
Henry DeTamble: Not a stitch on him. And after she gives him the blanket she happens to be carrying, he explains to her that he's a time traveler. Now, for some reason I'll never understand, she believes him.
Alba at Nine: 'Cause it's true.

Clare at Eight: Are you married?
Henry DeTamble: Yes, I am.
Clare at Eight: Is your wife a time traveler?
Henry DeTamble: No. No, thank God.
Clare at Eight: Do you love her?
Henry DeTamble: Yes. Very much. What's wrong?
Clare at Eight: Nothing. I was just hoping you're married to me.

Henry DeTamble: Where's Henry?
Clare Abshire: Uh, I left him sleeping. I needed some time away from him.
Henry DeTamble: How's that working out for you?

Clare Abshire: Honey, do you know who that is playing with Alba?
Henry DeTamble: That's Alba.
Clare Abshire: Yes, I know, but who is that with her?
Henry DeTamble: That's your daughter. She's time-travelling. Is it too weird for you?
Clare Abshire: No, it's actually kind of magical.

Richard DeTamble: Well, I suppose I have to meet her parents.
Henry DeTamble: Her Dad is a Republican, and a hunter.
Richard DeTamble: Oh dear!

Henry DeTamble: I never wanted to have anything in my life that I couldn't stand losing. But it's too late for that. It's not because you're beautiful and smart. I don't feel alone anymore. Will you marry me?
Clare Abshire: No. I didn't mean that. I just wanted to try it, to say it, to assert my own sense of free will, but my free will wants you.
Henry DeTamble: So it's a yes?
Clare Abshire: Yes, of course.
